Why Cross-Border Financial Planning Is Different

Living and earning outside your home country changes almost every financial decision you make. A pension built up in one country, a property in another and a salary paid in a third currency do not arrange themselves into a plan. Most of the people who come to Clarity Global Wealth are British and other expats working in the UAE, across the Gulf, in Europe, Asia and Australia, along with internationally mobile professionals who have already moved two or three times and expect to move again. Some are years from retirement, some are weeks from a return home, and some have no fixed plan at all beyond wanting to stop guessing.

The questions that come up again and again

Four themes account for most of them. The first is the expat pension question: what to do with a UK defined benefit or defined contribution scheme once you no longer live in the UK, whether a transfer makes sense, and how the income will be taxed when you eventually draw it. The second is cross-border tax planning, where the residency rules of two countries overlap or contradict each other and the timing of a move matters more than the move itself. The third is estate planning, because a will written in one jurisdiction may not govern assets held in another, and inheritance tax can follow you long after you have left. The fourth is investment structuring: whether the products commonly sold to expats abroad, often offshore bonds and regular savings plans, genuinely suit someone who may be resident somewhere else entirely in five years.

How we work, and where the advice comes from

Clarity Global Wealth is an independent information and introduction service. We research and publish detailed guides on financial planning for expats, and we build free tools that let you test your own numbers before you speak to anyone. We do not provide financial advice ourselves.

When you are ready for advice, we introduce you to a regulated advisory firm chosen for your circumstances: where you live now, where your assets sit, where you expect to be in ten years, and the kind of planning you need. The introduction is free, the first consultation is complimentary, and any advice you receive comes from the regulated firm directly. For a UK expat weighing up a pension transfer, or a family working out what a move will cost them in tax, the value is in reaching the right specialist first rather than the nearest one.
